Love Unbound: The Story of Mata Yashoda and Krishna

Perhaps she is the most important mother figure in Indian mythology. She, the mother of Lord Krishna and Lord Balrama attained immortality by Lord Krishna’s childhood stories. Mata Yashoda, the foster mother of Lord Krishna, holds a significant place in Hindu mythology. This article explores the beautiful bond between Yashoda and Krishna, highlighting her unwavering love and devotion.

As in all mythological stories, there is a story on how she became the mother of Lord Krishna. As per Bhagvata purana, Yashoda and Nanda in their previous birth, a couple who made a great penance for Lord Vishnu. He appeared and asked them what they wanted. They said with much respect, “Great Lord, we would like to treat you like our son.” Lord Vishnu accepted. After all, he was never used to mother’s love.

One day, while playing as a mischievous toddler, Krishna popped some dirt into his mouth. Yashoda, ever watchful, caught him in the act. When she asked him to open his mouth, expecting to see dirt, Krishna revealed a breathtaking sight. Within his tiny mouth, Yashoda witnessed a dazzling display – the vast expanse of the universe! Galaxies twinkled, planets spun, and celestial beings moved with purpose. Overwhelmed by this divine vision, Yashoda could only stand speechless. This incredible display served as a glimpse into Krishna’s true nature, the divine dwelling within the playful child.

Though Mata Yashoda played an integral part in Shri Krishna’s childhood, She once lamented to him that she did not get to witness his marriage. This wish was fulfilled in the next birth when Krishna says that in the future he will take the Avatara of Sri Venkateshwara and then he will have Yashoda as his mother, Vakula Matha. She could then, witness Lord Venkateshwara’s marriages. That way, Krishna became her child twice. Also, we know that in Tirupati, the most followed name of Lord Venkateshwara is ‘Govinda’, another famous name of Krishna.

A Bond Beyond Lifetimes

According to some beliefs, Yashoda was a reincarnation of Yogmaya, Lord Vishnu’s divine energy. This explains their deep connection that transcended lifetimes.

Lord Venkateshwara’s marriage

Legend tells a beautiful story about Lord Venkateshwara’s (also known as Srinivasa) marriage to Padmavati. After a disagreement with his consort Lakshmi, Srinivasa came to Earth. Here, he fell in love with Padmavati, the princess known for her devotion. Vakuladevi, his aide, approached Padmavati’s father, King Akasha Raja, with the marriage proposal. Meanwhile, Srinivasa, disguised as a fortune teller, assured Padmavati that her beloved hunter was no ordinary man. With the blessings of the sages and the stars aligning, Srinivasa and Padmavati were finally united in a joyous ceremony. This divine marriage is celebrated in the Tirumala temple, a sacred place for many devotees.
