Krishna is a superstar among Hindu gods! Known for his awesome powers, playful tricks, and overflowing love, he’s also the eighth incarnation of the mighty Vishnu. But Krishna’s story goes beyond battles and miracles. One of the most fascinating things about him is his wives and his marriages.
Eight wives of Lord Krishna
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna had eight principal wives, also known as Ashtabharya. They are:
- Rukmini: She was the princess of Vidarbha and was considered Lord Krishna’s first and most important wife.
- Satyabhama: She was the daughter of King Satrajit and was known for her beauty and strength.
- Jambavati: She was the daughter of Jambavan, the king of bears, and was known for her wisdom and devotion.
- Kalindi: She was the daughter of the sun god and was known for her beauty and grace.
- Mitravinda: She was the daughter of King Vrsadarbha and was known for her intelligence and bravery.
- Nagnajiti: She was the daughter of King Nagnajit and was known for her devotion and compassion.
- Bhadra: She was the daughter of King Vasudeva and was known for her gentle nature and kindness.
- Lakshmana: She was the daughter of King Duryodhana and was known for her determination and strength.
These eight wives of Lord Krishna are revered and worshipped by devotees and are considered to be symbols of strength, devotion, and wisdom. Lord Krishna’s marriages with these women are seen as symbolic representations of his divine nature and his role as a protector and guide for humanity.
Shri Krishna and Rukmini
Lord Krishna and Rukmini
Rukmini, a beautiful princess of Vidarbha, loved Lord Krishna deeply and desired only him as her husband. Despite having many suitors, she defied her brother, the king, who wanted her to marry someone else. With the help of a friend, Krishna won Rukmini’s hand in marriage after defeating the king. Known for her devotion and love, Rukmini became Krishna’s most important consort, supporting him throughout his life. Even today, she is revered as a symbol of love and devotion, inspiring followers of Lord Krishna.
Lord Krishna and Satyabhama
Satyabhama, another of Lord Krishna’s principal wives, was known for her unwavering loyalty, strength, and fierce love for him. Unlike Rukmini, who was a princess, Satyabhama was the daughter of a wealthy king and a skilled warrior herself. Legend tells of her accompanying Krishna on battles, even demanding to join him on his quest to defeat the demon Narakasura. Her bravery and archery skills proved invaluable in the fight. Despite her warrior spirit, Satyabhama’s devotion to Krishna remained central. This story highlights the multifaceted nature of Krishna’s relationships, where love and strength could coexist.
Lord Krishna and Kalindi
Often referred to by the name Yamuna, Kalindi is another wife of Lord Krishna. Unlike Rukmini and Satyabhama, Kalindi isn’t a princess or a warrior. According to some versions of the story, she is the personification of the sacred Yamuna River. Deeply devoted to Krishna, Kalindi longed to be with him. Some tales depict her performing intense penance to win his heart. Krishna eventually accepted her devotion and married her. Theirs represents a love story intertwined with nature, where devotion transcends form. Kalindi’s presence as the Yamuna River symbolizes not only love but also the life-giving force that sustains Krishna’s homeland.
